Jack and Ralph, who are increasingly at odds, travel up the mountain.

Ralph, Jack, and a quiet, dreamy boy named Simon soon form a loose triumvirate of leaders with Ralph as the ultimate authority. One day while he is there, Jack and Lord of the flies the followers erect an offering to the Lord of the flies the nearby: The hunters then decapitate the sow and place its head on a sharpened stake in the jungle as an offering to the beast.

Simon, who faints frequently and is probably an epileptic[6] [7] has a secret hideaway where he goes to be alone. Although it was not a great success at the time—selling fewer than three thousand copies in the United States during before going out of print—it soon went on to become a best-seller.

The semblance of order quickly deteriorates as the majority of the boys turn idle; they give little aid in building shelters, spend their time having fun and begin to develop paranoias about the island.

Ralph is overwhelmed by the knowledge that he is safe but, thinking about what has happened on the island, he begins to weep. The following morning, Ralph and Piggy discuss what they have done.

Table of Contents Plot Overview In the midst of a raging war, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island.

The following morning, Jack orders his tribe to begin a hunt for Ralph. When he wakes up, he goes to the mountain, where he sees the dead parachutist. Later, encountering the bloody, fly-covered head, Simon has a terrible vision, during which it seems to him that the head is speaking.

Any sense of order or safety is permanently eroded when Roger, now sadistic, deliberately drops a boulder from his vantage point above, killing Piggy and shattering the conch. At first, the boys enjoy their life without grown-ups and spend much of their time splashing in the water and playing games.

The boys, asleep below, do not notice the flashing lights and explosions in the clouds. Once assembled, the boys set about electing a leader and devising a way to be rescued.

The frenzied boys mistake Simon for the beast, attack him, and beat him to death. With the hunters closely behind him, Ralph trips and falls. Ralph insists that no such beast exists, but Jack, who has started a power struggle with Ralph, gains a level of control over the group by boldly promising to kill the creature.

Well on its way to becoming a modern classic". The hunters fail in their attempt to catch a wild pig, but their leader, Jack, becomes increasingly preoccupied with the act of hunting.

How these play out, and how different people feel the influences of these form a major subtext of Lord of the Flies. Both Ralph and Piggy participate in the melee, and they become deeply disturbed by their actions after returning from Castle Rock. Ralph hides for the rest of the night and the following day, while the others hunt him like an animal.

They obey, but before they have finished the task, most of them have slipped away to join Jack. The Lord of the Flies also warns Simon that he is in danger, because he represents the soul of man, and predicts that the others will kill him.

Jack angrily runs away down the beach, calling all the hunters to join him. Simon, in addition to supervising the project of constructing shelters, feels an instinctive need to protect the "littluns" younger boys.

Ralph, now deserted by most of his supporters, journeys to Castle Rock to confront Jack and secure the glasses. The boys establish a form of democracy by declaring that whoever holds the conch shall also be able to speak at their formal gatherings and receive the attentive silence of the larger group.

Receiving no support, Jack storms off alone to form his own tribe. The officer turns his back so that the boys may regain their composure. Because Ralph appears responsible for bringing all the survivors together, he immediately commands some authority over the other boys and is quickly elected their "chief".

Not long after the meeting, some military planes engage in a battle high above the island. Ralph, Jack, and another boy, Simon, set off on an expedition to explore the island. Ralph is optimistic, believing that grown-ups will come to rescue them but Piggy realises the need to organise: Jack and the other children, filthy and unkempt, also revert to their true ages and erupt into sobs.

This unexpected meeting again raises tensions between Jack and Ralph. Two boys—the fair-haired Ralph and an overweight, bespectacled boy nicknamed "Piggy"—find a conchwhich Ralph uses as a horn to convene all the survivors to one area.

Following a long chase, most of the island is consumed in flames. They choose Ralph as their leader, and Ralph appoints another boy, Jack, to be in charge of the boys who will hunt food for the entire group.

When they return, Ralph declares that they must light a signal fire to attract the attention of passing ships. One night, an aerial battle occurs near the island while the boys sleep, during which a fighter pilot ejects from his plane and dies in the descent.Lord of the Flies () IMDb 90 min NR Subtitles and Closed Captions The story of thirty English schoolboys stranded on an uncharted island at the start of the "next" war, Lord of the Flies is a seminal film of the New American Cinema and a fascinating anti-Hollywood experiment.
